Is Facebook stealing the spotlight? New features available on Facebook now seem to imitate features on paid dating sites. One of the ways Facebook has been stealing away customers is by adding features, such as the new subscription button, available on everyone’s profile. The button allows people to subscribe to things you post without being your friend. It is kind of like followers, on twitter or a fan club, not to sure what do you guys think? Anyways this feature allows you to pick certain information to share and you can group this information as wanted. This allows people to create groups and almost a sub-profile on Facebook. Dating online through Facebook isn’t so uncommon, so will this continue to grow with every Facebook update? I think so; Facebook has enough users to undermine the traditional online dating sites. As soon as users incorporate their “dating profile” through subscriptions, why pay somewhere else?
A large part of the online dating world is having someone picked out for you as well as a small guarantee that the person on the site isn't a psychopath or a creep. With facebook there is no guarantee that the person you find will not be one of those 2 things. I think there will always be a market for online dating just for safety and security reasons. Facebook is more of a step 2 to online dating when you are trying to learn even more about the person. I doubt facebook will ever totally take away online dating.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I agree with Facebook taking over other online dating sites. True, Facebook has been a source of meeting people and can be a starting point for a relationship, but these online dating sites have much more sophisticated forms of matching people such as their compatability/personality profiling tests. Facebook cannot compare on that level. Facebook will always be first and foremost a social media site, just maybe not ever a one stop shop for online dating. But I will say that I started dating my current boyfriend due to Facebook.
ReplyDeleteI also believe that facebook is not stealing the spotlight from online dating sites. Facebook is more for I would say creepers. Not saying you won't come across some creeps on dating websites but facebook is an unlimited amount of people who could of just randomly stumbled onto your page. With the dating websites it actually helps you look for something specific. Helping you search a lot better since it narrows down to your specific likings.
ReplyDeleteIts very common for friends of mine to find their new fling over Facebook, whether by "Facebook stalking" them after a party or even just skimming a friend's "friends list" for potential single girls. It is a very interesting thing to witness and it seems to be rather effective way to meet new girls.

i dont believe this tactc will take away from internet dating at all. facebook of course is going to have some relation because it is for social networking but it is unsimilar to dating sites. if someone were looking for those type of services i dont believe they would us fcebook as opposed to eharmony.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the statement of Facebook being considered an "undercover" dating site, but because of many perpetrators and evil doers it will never reach the levels of those trusted sites such as eHarmony.

Facebook is a social networking site so along with this comes with communication, which may lead to dating. I don't think that this will in turn take away from the current online dating sites. These online dating sites are geared towards finding that special someone. They have a purpose and I feel that they will stick around.
